Ephesians 2:19-22

"Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."

As we prepare for our first Sunday in the new facility our main focus must be on the work of Jesus Christ in this place. A lot of time, money, and energy has gone into the work of this building. It would be very easy to "pat ourselves on the back" and say what a wonderful job we have done in accomplishing this wonderful feat! However, we must remember what Scripture tells us, "...therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God..." This church is a body of believers who belong to the household of the Lord. Look at the example of new home-owners. They buy a house and that house becomes their household. They get to decorate it how they want, paint it whatever colors they'd like, and even renovate if they wish! Why? Because it is their house. The church is God's household, and it is ultimately The Lord who is responsible for the work that has been done in our midst.

"...Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord..." What is the cornerstone of a building? "The cornerstone (or foundation stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure." Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of this building! He is the foundation, He is the stone that bridges the church to God. It is only because of what Christ has done for us on the cross that we can have a right relationship to God, and in turn the only reason that this building can be built. Jesus Christ must be the cornerstone not only of this building and what we do from here on out, but also the cornerstone in our own lives. The foundation of our lives must be Jesus Christ, and everything else positions around Him.

So as we gather for our first Sundy, let us remeber that this church belongs to the Lord, and that the foundation (the cornerstone of this church) is Jesus Christ because of the price He paid for us on the cross. Let us also examine our hearts, and ask the question, is Christ the cornerstone of my life?
